Myokines - Skeletal Muscles

For decades, the skeletal muscles were considered tissues of contraction to provide mobility through their attachments to the skeleton’s bones. From 2003 onward, research worldwide has accumulated, showing that skeletal muscles release over 600 cytokines when active. Cytokines are relatively small molecules called cyto (cell) kines (activator). Weightlifting activates muscle hypertrophy cytokines and anabolic effects on distant target cells, promoting the metabolism of target cell organs. Healing and more active cell replacement, which is supported in the face of damage or aging, is facilitated through apoptosis. Aerobic exercise (repetition without additional weight) improves target cell function. An example is the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which improves alertness, memory, and cognition. The lecture demonstrates that all organ systems communicate with each other through cytokines. New Eden supports an elevation in the synthesis of cytokines and is most active in the phase 1 cell cycle to foster homeostasis (the normal balance of all intracellular parameters) for all cells and myokine production.
